Dudley Hewitt Cup Preview

Are you ready? The Dudley Hewitt Cup is less than a week away. The opening game will be on Tuesday, April 17th featuring the host Thunder Bay Northstars playing in Game One.

The Stouffville Spirit captured the final Dudley-Hewitt berth Friday in dramatic fashion as they rallied late to claim the Buckland Cup, emblematic of Ontario Junior Hockey League champions. Trailing the Whitby Fury 3-1 with less than a minute to go in regulation in game 6 of the OJHL finals, the Spirit struck twice with goaltender Jonathon Hall on the bench on favour of an extra attacker to force overtime, including the equalizer by Christian Powers with just 11 seconds remaining and then proceeded to win at 9:48 of the first extra session thanks to Brandon Gaudette’s game-winner.

The stunning victory allowed Stouffville to capture their first-ever OJHL championship and the remaining berth in the Dudley-Hewitt Cup.

The Wisconsin Wilderness enter the tournament as the SIJHL champions. The Wilderness feature SIJHL top goaltender Tanner Milliron and top defenceman Anthony Calabrese on a roster that also won the SIJHL regular season title with a 49-6-1 record. The Wilderness beat the Fort Frances Lakers in seven games in the SIJHL final. The Northstars received a birth as the host team.

The Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League’s Soo Thunderbirds are among the four entries in the tournament. The T-birds captured the NOJHL title after beating the North Bay Trappers in five games.
