Kirkland Lake crowns Powassan

POWASSAN – Ryan Aubertin tallied three times to help lead the Kirkland Lake Gold Miners to a 9-3 victory over the Powassan Voodoos Friday evening in Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League play at the Powassan Sportsplex.

It took just 26 seconds for the Voodoos’ Steve Harland to open the scoring on the night while extending a consecutive game point streak to 17.

Kirkland Lake countered that by tacking on four unanswered markers before the first period was complete to take control of the contest.

After Luc Soares tied it, via the power play, at 5:10 then got one from Steven Babin and a pair off the stick of Aubertin at 19:41.

The Gold Miners’ Connor Thie assisted on two of the tallies to run a point streak of his own to a dozen.

Kirkland Lake added to their cushion in the middle frame on efforts supplied by Joel Fortin and Jeremy Dumont to chase Powassan starter Matt Young in favour of Jack Ondrovic.

The move seemed boost the play of the home side as the Voodoos struck for goals by Jeremy St. Pierre and another by Harland to make it a 6-3 game after 40 minutes.

In the end however the defending NOJHL champion Gold Miners would prevail getting third period tallies from Thie, Zach Pease and another by Aubertin, who finished off his hat trick.

Josh Erickson finished the night with 31 stops to record the win for Kirkland Lake.

Young suffered the loss making 17 saves in defeat while Ondrovic allowed three against on 26 attempts in relief.
