Day one of the 2012 OJHL Governors’ Showcase in Cobourg, Ontario was a rousing success with more than 100 scouts taking in the action.

After last season’s unprecedented success, the Cobourg Cougars stepped up to host the Showcase weekend for the second consecutive year and have not disappointed with their efforts once again, giving fans, players and scouts alike an entertaining environment. "Once again the Cobourg Cougars organization, from staff to volunteers, have exceeded our expectations in assuring another great OJHL event, allowing the league to showcase our players," said OJHL Commissioner Marty Savoy. "With more than 100 scouts in attendance, the Showcase has proven to be an important step in the identification of our up-and-coming stars."

Another exciting new addition this year in the appearance of OJHL Images in Cobourg, headed up by OJHL Dirctor of Photography Tim Bates. With 13 photographers in attendance, OJHL Images is shooting all teams head shots, as well as game action shots of each the players. "OJHL Images remains dedicated to providing the league, its members and fans with high quality digital imaging of its players," said Bates. "Although a massive undertaking, I’m extremely proud of the group of photographers that we have assembled to represent OJHL Images." The day kicked off with the Whitby Fury falling to the Newmarket Hurricanes 5-3, while the smaller pad saw the Milton Icehawks claw back from a 7-1 deficit before losing 8-5 to the North York Rangers. The St. Michael’s Buzzers held on for a 4-3 victory over the Burlington Cougars, while the Buffalo Jr. Sabres made the trip in to upend the Orangeville Flyers 4-2. Finally, the hometown Cobourg Cougars outshot the Stouffville Spirit 39-28, but were on the wrong side of a 6-4 battle.

"The action has never been this entertaining and competitive," said OJHL Manager of Hockey Operations Brent Garbutt. "It is a credit to the players drive and determination that there are so many scouts in attendance and I look forward to seeing this season’s scholarship opportunities that arise for our players."

"The Cobourg Cougars are a first-class organization," added OJHL Director of Operations Izak Westgate. "The club’s operational standards are an example to everyone and once again the Cougars have set the bar high for future Showcase hosts."
