I am not big on social media for personal use. In my opinion social media was designed for commercial use, and it really is very effective in commercial applications. Once in a while though I have stumbled across some interested personal uses of social media, and even more rarely I stumble upon a personal social media expression that actually takes on a deep meaning.
Recently I stumbled upon a social media post about a man receiving $86400 a day for the rest of his life. The question was posed “what would you do if you were given $86400 a day for the rest of your life?”
An interesting question. With that kind of money though, it would be a race to spend every dollar every day. Because the one caveat to the question is that no money can carry over from one day to the next. So, every day it would be a race to spend or give it away to people who need it.
Think for a moment if this were you how would you spend or give that money away.
Now, when we realize that every day we are given 86400 seconds per day to live, and every one of those seconds has value. How do you begin to view your time and the value associated with time?
Time. It is the one thing we can never get more of. No matter how wealthy, our seconds, minutes, hours and days are limited.
So why do so many of us waste those 86400 each day or portions of them each day? How much will you waste today?
I watch a lot of young players wasting their time and talent. Not spending the time investing in themselves. Investing in the gym, in studying film, in learning how to become the best player they can be while pursuing their dreams.
Now we all cant magically see what is a waste of time before we actually start spending it. In order to find bad investments you usually have to take a little bit of a loss. The smart people though recognize when they are going to experience those losses more quickly and they stop investing in them.
I am guilty of making bad investments like everyone else. As I have grown older though, I have learned that continuing on with a bad investment is not something you have to do. It doesn’t matter what people think or say when you make the personal decision to stop investing in a loosing proposition. It doesn’t matter because it is your time and no one else’s.
Spending an hour on a person who brings you no value makes no sense. Spending an hour in the gym focusing on yourself and the pursuit of your dream is a valuable investment.
Spending a whole season with a team or in a league that cares nothing about you is a terrible waste of time, and a huge investment with no return.
As we prepare for a new year its my hope that all of us young and old will spend and invest our time more wisely in those people and things that give us a valuable return. Because no matter how wealthy you are, the only thing you can never buy more of is time.
