European College Hockey is not something new to the European development ladder. Leagues in Europe began forming in 2001, and represent the fastest growing portion of hockey in Europe and Scandinavia.
When comparing European College Hockey to NCAA or USports in Canada, what you will find are some very similar and familiar things.
In Europe, colloege hockey players can range in age from eighteen to twenty five. This is similar to NCAA rules regarding ages, and years of eligibility. Unlike North America though, a player may play as long as he is within that age range, and still enrolled in university. In theory, a player may earn his undergraduate degree from eighteen to twenty one, and then play additional years while he completes his masters or doctorate.
One major difference between European universities and those in North America is the length of time it takes to earn your degree. In Europe the average time to complete a bachelors degree is three years, not four. This allows for players to graduate sooner, and enter the workforce sooner.
The level of play? Most European College Hockey players would be compared to NCAA D-3 level. Keep in mind though that the average age of a player in European college leagues is twenty years old, and the average age of those in D-3 is twenty three.

A reminder for those players who dont already have an NCAA commitment is that the cost of attending and playing hockey at a European University is sixty to seventy percent less expensive than an NCAA D-3 or ACHA program. That is before any academic scholarship money is provided.
