SERIES PREVIEW: (8) Red Deer vs. (1) Prince Albert

Will the 2026 WHL Playoffs serve as a coronation for the East Division champion Prince Albert Raiders?

Or could the upstart Red Deer Rebels depose the formidable Eastern Conference leaders?

If the regular season series is any indication, fans could be in for a matchup of razor-thin margins.

Prince Albert and Red Deer split their four meetings with two regulation wins each, with the Raiders claiming victory prior to the New Year and the Rebels taking two off their opponents in March.

From top to bottom, the Raiders feature a stacked lineup while ranking second in the league’s overall standings and second in goals for, while entering the postseason as the WHL’s stingiest squad.

Nine PA skaters eclipsed 20 goals this season, headlined by San Jose Sharks prospect Max Heise’s 29 tallies and closely followed by top 2026 NHL Draft prospect Daxon Rudolph with 28 strikes.

Rudolph’s 28 strikes tied franchise great Josh Morrisey’s record for single-season goals by a Raiders defenceman.

He lines up alongside captain (and Red Deer product) Justice Christensen, an offensive defenceman who is fresh off completing a Gordie Howe hat trick in the final weekend of the regular season.

General Manager Curtis Hunt made some bold moves in the forward group by trading for Dallas Stars prospect Brandon Gorzynski in mid-December and Vancouver Canucks prospect Braeden Cootes after the dynamic centreman returned from the 2026 IIHF World Junior Championship.

Cootes, who formerly captained the Seattle Thunderbirds, became the third-youngest player in Canucks history to make their NHL debut earlier this season, and leads the Raiders in points per game (1.40).

Between the pipes, Czech import Michal Orsulak leads all WHL goaltenders in goals-against average (2.22), while ranking in the top five in save percentage (.907), wins (28) and shutouts (4).

At the other end, the hardscrabble Rebels have been hot in the home stretch of the regular season despite trading away three NHL prospects.

Draft-eligible Beckett Hamilton led the pack with a breakout 62-point (24G-38A) campaign, and has found chemistry with trade acquisition and first-year WHLer Poul Anderson, who boasts a team-best 25 goals.

Red Deer’s roster features 11 WHL rookies, highlighted by top-scoring defenceman Nate Yellowaga (7G-20A).

Captain Talon Brigley is closing out his career as the Rebels’ all-time games played leader, with 329 regular season matches and, now, four trips to the WHL Playoffs under his belt.

With Minnesota Wild prospect Chase Wutzke off to the Moose Jaw Warriors, rookie Matthew Kondro has shouldered the load for Red Deer

Kondro has put together a 19-19-4-1 record, a 3.49 goals-against average, a .892 save percentage and one shutout.

This marks Red Deer’s return to the postseason after a one-season absence, while the Raiders were swept by the eventual WHL Champion Medicine Hat Tigers in Round Two of the 2025 WHL Playoffs.

The last time these teams clashed was in 2019, when Prince Albert downed Red Deer in the opening round en route to winning the Ed Chynoweth Cup for the first time since 1985.

Puck drops for Game 1 at the Art Hauser Centre on Friday, March 27, at 7:00 p.m. ST before the teams make tracks for Albert and Red Deer’s Marchant Crane Centrium for Game 3 on Tuesday, March 31, at 7:00 p.m. MT.

GAME BREAKERS

Red Deer: Bet on Beckett. The 5-foot-11, 173-pound winger enjoyed a breakout 24-goal season (including three game-winners), averaging more than a point per game from January 1 on. Hamilton, who is ranked 75th among all North American skaters leading into the Draft, makes hay as a two-way forward who is leaned on heavily in Red Deer’s end. Hamilton hit the back of the net in both of the Rebels’ wins over the Raiders.

Prince Albert: Daximum effort incoming. The 2023 WHL first overall pick is ranked sixth among all North American skaters by NHL Central Scouting in the agency’s midterm rankings for the 2026 NHL Draft. Rudolph finished third in goals (28) among all Western League defencemen. He’s come in clutch with six game-winners and even buried the overtime goal for Team East at the 2026 WHL Prospects Game. The Lacome, Alta. product grew up going to Rebels games and has garnered a goal and three assists against Red Deer in four games this season.

GOALTENDING

Red Deer: Rookie Matthew Kondro has had some shining moments in his first WHL campaign, highlighted by a 54-save win over the Tigers on February 13, 2026. The 6-foot-1, 165-pound puckstopper is 2-1-0-0 against the Raiders with a 3.38 GAA and .916 save percentage, though a 7-3 loss on December 6 skews those numbers significantly. In his two wins against Prince Albert, Kondro made a total of 73 saves and a .952 save percentage.

Prince Albert: Michal Orsulak has continued the tradition of phenomenal goaltending in Hockeytown North. The 6-foot-4, 220-pound 18-year-old is ranked second among all North American goaltenders in the NHL CSS midterms and had strong showings at the 2026 IIHF World Junior Championship, where he backstopped Czechia to silver (and made a pair of penalty shot stops to eliminate Canada), and the 2026 WHL Prospects Game, where he denied all 16 shots he faced. However, Orsulak hasn’t played against Red Deer in the regular season and will likely see his first start against the Rebels in Game 1.

X FACTOR

Red Deer: Matej Mikes is making up for lost time. Red Deer’s first-round pick in the 2025 CHL Import Draft missed the start of the regular season due to an injury, but started finding the scoresheet consistently from February on with 24 points (11G-13A) in 47 games. The Karlovy Vary, Cze. product was Red Deer’s most effective weapon against Prince Albert, with Mikes lighting the lamp three times and tacking on two assists in three games.

Prince Albert: Prince Albert paid a king’s ransom to bring in Braeden Cootes, but he’s been well worth the price of admission with 40 points (14G-26A) in 28 games in the green and gold. The 19-year-old put up eight points (2G-6A) in the 2025 Playoffs as the T-Birds pushed the first-seed Everett Silvertips to six games, and he also brings valuable experience from Seattle’s 2023 championship run- though he didn’t get into the lineup as a 16-year-old.  Cootes registered two assists in his lone appearance against the Rebels on March 3, 2026.
