Even before Ľuboš Bartečko was named Head Coach of the Red River Spartans’ USPHL Premier team, he was already a familiar and trusted face within the organization.
As Head Performance Coach at the Athlete’s Compound, Bartečko had already spent countless hours working closely with local athletes long before he stepped behind the Spartans’ bench.
Drawing from a playing career that included time in the NHL, three Olympic appearances, and gold and silver medals at the World Championships, Bartečko brought a mentality centered on development.
“We wanted to help our community, and we wanted to help our players get to the next level,” Bartečko said.
That quickly became the foundation of the Red River Spartans’ culture. Rather than focusing solely on wins and losses, Bartečko emphasized building habits that would help players develop both on and off the ice.
“It’s important to have the Next Day Mentality,” Bartečko said. “It is not just about scoring a goal tonight and then taking it easy tomorrow. It is doing the same thing every day.”
Those principles shaped the team’s daily approach throughout the season. Practices had a purpose, expectations remained high, and the Spartans worked to mirror the discipline and determination required at higher levels of the game.
Strong Performances On The Ice
The Spartans produced several notable performances during Bartečko’s first season behind the bench.
- Jock recorded 67 points with 37 goals and 30 assists in 41 games.
- Sander Korrell recorded 91 points with 31 goals and 60 assists in 44 games.
- Red River finished third in the USPHL Premier Great Lakes Division during the regular season.
- The Spartans finished 13th overall in the USPHL Premier during the regular season.
But some of the most meaningful results became clear after the season ended.
Spartans Advance To The Next Level
Nine Red River players earned collegiate or professional opportunities following the season:
- Greyson Betzold – Roosevelt University
- Nico Cervenak – Midland University
- Cayden Conover – Jacksonville University
- Jake Hayward – Milton Keynes Lightning
- Sander Korrell – Ski Ishockey Elite
- Hunter Oger – Maryville University
- Jacob Rönnqvist – Bollnäs IS
- Cooper Walling – Maryville University
- Bryson Walz – Northwood University
Those advancements reflected the mission Bartečko established from the beginning: not simply to build a strong junior hockey team, but to help build players’ futures.
After leading the Red River Spartans’ USPHL Premier team last season, Bartečko will now take over as Head Coach of the organization’s NCDC team.
The foundation for that next chapter began long before the puck dropped. It started inside the Athlete’s Compound, strengthened behind the bench, and can now be seen in the players advancing to collegiate and professional hockey opportunities.
For the Red River Spartans, Bartečko’s first season as Head Coach was about more than one year of hockey. It marked the beginning of a culture built on discipline, consistency, excellence and brotherhood — and a commitment to helping players reach the next level.
