Ex-Trapper Guimond signs with Vancouver Canucks organization

NORTH BAY – North Bay Jr. Trappers alumnus Sacha Guimond has signed an American Hockey League Contract with the Vancouver Canucks and will join the expansion Utica Comets of the AHL in 2013-14.

Guimond will also be attending Vancouver Canucks Training Camp and will play in the 2013 Young Stars Classic in Penticton, B.C.

The 22-year-old Ville-Marie, Quebec product split the 2012-13 season with the ECHL’s San Francisco Bulls and the Gwinnet Gladiators where he registered 49 points in 58 games.  Last year Guimond was named the ECHL Defenceman of the Year and was named to the First All-Star Team and the All-Rookie Team.

Guimond starred for the Trappers for  1 ½ seasons from the fall of 2009 to December of 2010.

He took the NOJHL by storm by being selected to Team Canada East and the CJHL Top Prospects team in his first 2 months in North Bay; a season in which he recorded 16 goals and 32 assists for 48 points in 52 games and was on the 2009-10 NOJHL Team East All-Star team.

Guimond left the Trappers for the OHL’s London Knights in December of 2010 and finished off the final year and a half of junior with the Baie-Comeau Drakkar of the QMJHL before turning pro last fall.

NORTH BAY NOTES: Turcotte moving on

Despite battling through injuries in 2012-13, Jr. Trappers forward Devan Turcotte has received a commitment from Williston State University (NJCAA) in North Dakota this upcoming season, where he will join teammate Trevor Hunt.

Last year, Turcotte finished his junior A hockey eligibility with 5 goals and 1 assist in 15 regular season games.

“Devan battled a shoulder injury for most of the season requiring surgery but we feel Devan deserves a fresh start and will make an impact,” said Williston State Tetons head coach Gregory Seamus in a team press release.

“Devan is real solid, just needs to get his rhythm back and he will get that shot here with us.”

Turcotte, the only 3rd year player on the Jr. Trappers last season, was a teammate of Guimond in the fall of 2010.
