Elliot Lake’s Wagner 2nd in CJHL in shorthanded goals; Espanola’s Dubchak & Bean tied for 10th

SUDBURY – Special teams’ success while their respective clubs have been down a man has allowed a trio of Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League standouts to place themselves among the elite at the national level when it comes to shorthanded goals.

Fresh of notching his NOJHL-leading eighth shorthanded marker of the season in double overtime Friday evening, Elliot Lake Bobcats sniper Brett Wagner is now second overall across the 128-team Canadian Junior Hockey League in tallies while his side has been in a penalty kill situation.

Only Julien Houle of the Princeville Titan in the goal-friendly Quebec Junior AAA Hockey League has more shorties than Wagner as he has netted 11.

The man-down difference maker Wagner supplied last night in the two OT triumph over Espanola was also his seventh game-winning goal of the 2013-14 campaign, which slides him into sole possession of second spot in that category in the NOJHL. It also moved him into the top 10 in the CJHL as well in winners.

Wagner enters league play Saturday evening sitting fourth overall in NOJHL offensive production with 65 points on 34 tallies and 31 assists.

Meanwhile a pair of Espanola Rivermen has also contributed in shorthanded situations as Brennen Dubchak and Corbin Bean share second in the league in this department with four apiece. That also puts the duo in a tie for 10th overall in the CJHL.

Dubchak has been a model of consistency all season long and is currently riding a NOJHL-best 24-game point streak. He is presently second in league scoring with 70 points, one behind Gavin Burbach of the Soo Thunderbirds.

As for Bean, he too has been a difference maker for the Rivermen adding six game-winners along the way, which is third best in the NOJHL. His efforts have him tied for sixth in overall points with 61.

The following is the top 10 shorthanded goal leaders in the CJHL along with the team and league they are with, the number of games they have played along with total goals they have scored:
