The Death Pool – Maybe Teams Should Do Some Scouting Before Inviting Players To Camp

Some times kids you just can’t fix stupid.  Ya feel me?

What would you think of a team that didn’t scout the players they invited to camp before they actually invited them to camp?  You would probably say that’s not a real good team right?

So, to prove a point, I put out a fake player profile to 48 junior teams in United States and Canada.  Now I am not kidding this thing was so fake, it was unbelievable and I laughed when I was writing it.  I just figured I would send it out and see what happened.

I figured I would catch a couple of idiots and get some camp invites and get a good laugh out of it.  I caught 37 idiots.  Yep kids you read that right, 37 of 48 teams emailed me back offering me a camp invitation to either a pre draft or tryout camp.

It got even better when I called some of these idiots to accept the camp invitation and they were telling me how they saw me play last year!  Considering I didn’t play hockey last year, it was all I could do to keep from laughing on the phone while these idiots went on and on about how they liked my skill and skating and where they thought I fit in on their team.

One idiot even said this;

“I really liked what I saw and think your coach didn’t use you in a way that took advantage of your skills last year.  I already have an idea of who you would fit in with our returning players.”

So what does this say kids?  It says some teams will invite a freaking HAM SANDWICH to attend a camp and a lot of teams don’t even care who comes to camp.  It also says they are willing to lie in order to get you to camp, and it all comes down to getting your money.  Farizzle!

You know what else it says?  It says some teams are actually doing their jobs and scouting players before invitations go out.  One team was cool enough to figure out they were getting set up for this story to email me back saying;

“Thank you for your inquiry but we do not make a habit of inviting non existent players to our camps.”

When I called them and explained who I was and what I was doing, they got a laugh out of it, and said I needed to talk about the other idiots because they hurt everyone else in recruiting.

So what’s the moral of the story kids?  Any invite you get these days better be able to be followed up with an explanation of why they sent the email, where they saw you play, and just how much they really know about you.

Don’t go for the BS any more.  Do you really think all these invitations are being sent to you because they actually watched you play?  Save your money and don’t fall for the hype.  If you had 10 points in Midget AA last year do you really think a Tier II team is thinking of drafting you?  If you had a save percentage below .900 do you really think a junior team is going to draft you?

Come on kids, you’re smarter than that.  Parents you better be smarter than that, or you are going to be wasting a ton of money on the camp circuit this summer.
