Serpent River First Nation and City of Elliot Lake leaders Chief Isadore Day, Wiindawtegowinini and Mayor Rick Hamilton met today to discuss the future of hockey in Elliot Lake.
In recent months, the Elliot Lake Bobcats Junior ‘A’ hockey team relocated and had to leave the town’s hockey scene.
Serpent River First Nation is encouraged by the proposition to partner with the City of Elliot Lake for the continuation of NOJHL Junior ‘A’ hockey.
A ‘special’ meeting of the 2 councils is scheduled for May 21 2014 at 6pm at the Serpent River First Nation to discuss moving forward.
“This is an interesting proposition that, if it has all the right elements, could turn out to be an exciting opportunity for the region. We will look at the numbers, the governance structure and benefits. If that all makes sense, I’m sure our community will give the nod to proceed,” says Isadore Day, elected Chief of the Serpent River First Nation.
“This is yet another example of neighbours working together on a common goal. We look forward to discussions in relation to the continuation of Jr. A hockey in Elliot Lake. I agree with Chief Day, with the right plan, the dedicated partners, and the always diligent fans, we will achieve our goals. “ says Mayor Rick Hamilton
The intent of the meeting will be to discuss a joint plan that will strive toward immediate steps for the 2014-15 hockey season. The two will also look at ways to make a hockey team a sustainable joint venture.
