Ice Hockey U20 Challenge Cup of Asia kicks off in Russia

VLADIVOSTOK, Aug. 4 (Xinhua) — Ice Hockey U20 Challenge Cup of Asia got underway in Sakhalin, Russia, on Monday and will run through August 7, local media reported.

The Russian-based junior league team MHL and the U20 national teams from Kazakhstan, Japan and South Korea are participating in the tournament.

The game between the MHL and the Japanese team is scheduled for the event’s opening day.

The Challenge Cup of Asia is a series of international tournament in Asia organized by the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF). The annual competition are set in different categories – the men’s, women’s, and youth’s.

It is the second U20 Challenge Cup of Asia in a row that is held in Russia. The 2013 tournament was held in Khabarovsk with the Japanese defeating the local MHL Red Stars in the deciding game for the Cup’s win.
