Former Nickel Baron Brunet commits to NCAA

SUDBURY – The Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League has announced former Sudbury Nickel Barons forward Brody Brunet has committed to attend Lake Superior State University on scholarship in time for the 2016-17 season.

In 52 games last season Brunet, who turns 17 Oct. 2, registered 27 points as a rookie for the Nickel Barons in 2013-14 on 12 goals and 15 assists finishing sixth in Sudbury team scoring.

He’ll be joining the Sault Ste. Marie, Mich.-based school where the Lakers compete out of the Western Collegiate Hockey Association.

Brunet becomes the second Nickel Barons alumnus to secure a NCAA scholarship the in as many years as his teammate from last season, defenceman Bradley Bell, has begun his freshman year at R.P.I. in Troy, N.Y.

The Hanmer product saw his Canadian Junior Hockey League playing rights transferred by the Nickel Barons in mid-August to the Smiths Falls of the Central Canada Hockey League where he’ll suit up for the Bears this season.

With Brunet’s commitment, it brings the total number of players who competed in the NOJHL last season that are off to the college or university ranks to 31.
