Gold Miners edge Voodoos in OT

POWASSAN – Jamey Lauzon’s first goal in a Kirkland Lake Gold Miners uniform was a big as his tally 3:35 into the first overtime was the decider in his club’s 4-3 triumph over the Powassan Voodoos Friday evening in Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League play at the Powassan Sportsplex.

The visiting Gold Miners took a 1-0 lead after one period of play courtesy of Ethan Strong’s power play effort at 10:48.

Powassan countered in the second session notching markers 39 seconds apart off the sticks of Steve Harland and Jacob Erwin to go up 2-1 midway through the contest.

Kirkland Lake countered with a pair of quick goals themselves to retake the lead thanks to Connor Thie and Ryan Aubertin.

The home side pulled level in the final minute of the frame as Brendan D’Agostino buried his sixth of the season at 19:05.

After a scoreless third, the Gold Miners pulled out the victory in extra time as Lauzon finished off the work of Jeremy Dumont and Jeremy Picard-Fiset to give their side the additional point on the night.

Picard-Fiset had three assists overall to aid Kirkland Lake offensively while teammate Aubertin and Powassan’s Josh Ibbitson and Traven Reed chipped in with two helpers apiece.

Josh Erickson made 35 saves to pick up the win while Matt Young faced 45 shots in defeat for the Voodoos.
