Timmins tames Kirkland Lake in home opener

TIMMINS, Ont. – The Timmins Rock struck for six straight goals to defeat the Kirkland Lake Gold Miners 6-1 Saturday in Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League play at McIntyre Arena.

After a scoreless opening period it was the visiting Gold Miners who got on the board first 6:22 into the middle session thanks Brayden Stortz knocking in his second of the early campaign.

The Rock would counter that a minute and a half later as Jordan Rendle notched the equalizer to get Timmins rolling.

Building on Rendle’s tying tally, the home side went in front for good courtesy of Tristan Salesse at 15:15 of the period.

Timmins poured it on from there in the final frame tacking on four more to win going away.

Wayne Mathieu made it 3-1 two and a half minutes into the third while Mike Norris added to the cushion with 13:48 to go.

Kirkland Lake pulled starter Marc Audet in the latter stages of the contest in an effort to get closer, but Devin Panzeca answered that with an empty net marker with less than two minutes remaining.

Salesse then topped off the home-opening victory for the Rock with his second of the night to cap off the win.

Logan Ferrington made 32 saves in registering the triumph for Timmins while Audet had 39 stops in defeat for Kirkland Lake.
