Confessions Of A Junior Hockey Coach – Unethical Camp Recruiting Taking Place At Tier II

Every year I become more and more aware of how much the game change in how each team operate more as the business.  It is in some case becoming the assembly line, or the “puppy mill” as my good friend call it.  Team in many case acting with no integrity, and taking advantage of people when they know it is ethically and morally wrong to do so.

This is the prime example;

One team have relationship with player.  They know him, they like him.  They do not draft him, the do not sign him.  But when they know the player have offer to sign from another team in another league they invite him to main camp.

That team know that if the player take the camp invite, that the player will likely not have the option to sign with the other team that offer the contract later.

Both team at same Tier II level.  They in different leagues.  One own a Tier III team underneath the Tier II team though.  They know if the player no longer have the option to sign with the other team he be forced to sign with Tier III team when they cut him.

This is completely unethical practice.  This is the screwing of the player in order to fill the pay to play team.

Unfortunately this look to be happening more and more because there not enough player to fill all Tier III rosters.  So the Tier II team tell the lie only to later break the heart with the false promise of the call up later.

Player and parent need to stop being manipulated by this unscrupulous behavior of these team.  If one team offer the contract and it is the good offer, you never turn it down to accept the camp invitation.  That is just stupid behavior.

Any team that want you, really want you on the team either sign you or draft you.  It is that simple.  If they unwilling to commit to you, then why are you willing to give up a commitment from someone else?  What amaze me is how many of you do this.  Shocking to see how many of you still do not understand the truth.

There is the saying about opportunity knocking at the door.  Why do you not answer?  Another knocking may never happen.
