Jaskin, Weegar and Beaudry named the TELUS three stars of the week

Dmitrij Jaskin, MacKenzie Weegar and Michaël Beaudry were today named the TELUS three stars of the week for the period extending from January 14th to 20th, 2013.

Dmitrij Jaskin is this week’s first star after offering solid performances and playing inspired hockey. He collected an impressive 10 points in 3 games, making him the top scorer of the powerful Moncton Wildcats with 64 points, including 28 goals. He was named the first star in a 7-1 victory over the Saint John Sea Dogs after scoring two goals and adding three assists – a career high. He stepped up his game once again two days later during the visit of the Screaming Eagles, scoring one goal and adding three assists in a 6-3 win over Cape Breton. He was also named the second star of the night. During the Sea Dogs’ second visit in less than seven days, he recorded one assist and three shots on goal in a convincing 7-0 win. The 2nd round pick of the St. Louis Blues in 2011 has been a key component of the Moncton offence. The Wildcats currently sit 5th overall in the QMJHL standings.

The second star goes to Halifax Mooseheads defenseman MacKenzie Weegar. The 18 years-old Ottawa native collected one goal and five assists. He also maintained a solid +7 differential while his team registered 3 wins on the road. He was named the third star last Friday in a 11-2 overpowering victory over the Remparts a the Colisée by contributing four assists which tied the team record for a rookie defenseman. The previous mark was held by Alexandre Picard 11 years ago. He was also a big part of the team’s first shutout of the season, a 5-0 victory over the Sherbrooke Phoenix. Finally, Weegar stood out versus the Blainville-Boisbriand Armada. This confrontation between two of the League’s powerhouses ended in favour of the visitors with MacKenzie Weegar notching the winning goal at the very end of the third period. It was his seventh game of two or more points this season. Weegar leads all QMJHL players with a Plus-Minus differential of +35.

Michaël Beaudry of the Acadie-Bathurst Titan gets the TELUS third star of the week. He had a great time also with an impressive output of 8 points, including 3 goals, in 3 games. He participated in all of the team’s goals in a tough 6-5 loss of his own in overtime while the Prince Edward Island Rocket was the visitors. His offensive performance of two goals and three assists allowed him to be named the second star of the game. He also scored the equalizer midway through the third period sending the game into overtime. Beaudry recorded an assist and three shots on goal in a hard battle that the Titan eventually lost 5-4. Finally, he was named the third star in a 6-4 loss versus the Rimouski Océanic. He recorded one goal and one assist while maintaining a +2 differential. He trails only Zach O’Brien (68) with 61 points in 46 games.
