MWJHL announces two staff additions July 3, 2012 7:20 AM

SYLVANIA, Ohio – The Midwest Junior Hockey League has announced two additions to the league front office in director of hockey administration Mark Shutan and director of public and media relations Matt Mackinder.

“When starting a league from the ground up, you always want to surround yourself with good, quality people who have experience in their fields,” said MWJHL president and CEO Patrick Pylypuik. “The board of directors and myself are very pleased to have the high caliber of these two experts join our league.”

Shutan, a Chicago-area native, will also serve as the MWJHL’s Pointstreak administrator. He has worked in a similar capacity with the Great Lakes Junior Hockey League and the Central States Hockey League (now North American 3 Hockey League) and was the GLJHL’s director of player personnel from 2008-12 and the CSHL’s director of player personnel from 2004-11.

Shutan also served as the general manager of the CSHL’s Chicago Force from 2003-09.

A 1972 graduate of the Rochester (N.Y.) Institute of Technology, Shutan’s past hockey experience includes stints as the chairperson of the Illinois Amateur Hockey Association Tier I Committee, vice-president of the Chicago Metro High School Hockey League’s North Division, the 2006 tournament director for the USA Hockey National Junior B Showcase and in a variety of roles with the Deerfield Falcons and Deerfield High School associations in Illinois.

Shutan was honored with the USA Hockey Magazine Volunteer Appreciation Award in 2006, the Illinois Amateur Hockey Association’s Leadership Award in 2003 and the Chicago Metro High School Hockey League North Division Appreciation Award in 2001.

Mackinder, a 2001 graduate of Wayne State University in Detroit, comes to the MWJHL with public relations experience from the International Hockey League, Continental Elite Hockey League, Metro Jets (NA3HL) and the MLB’s Detroit Tigers and also contributes to entities such as Michigan Hockey Magazine, the Canadian Press and the Oakland (Mich.) Press.

Among his leadership posts, Mackinder is currently the news editor for U.S. College Hockey Online (USCHO.com), managing editor for Rubber Hockey Magazine and managing editor for MichiganCollegeHockey.com.

Mackinder, a Ferndale, Mich., native, now lives in mid-Michigan with his wife, Stephanie, their three kids, Ethan, Wyatt and Madelyn, and two dogs, Eddie and Max.
