Phantoms Goaltender Commits to University of Maine

The Youngstown Phantoms announced that goaltender Sean Romeo has committed to play collegiate hockey at the University of Maine beginning in fall 2014.

Romeo has posted a 15-12-0 record with a 2.91 GAA and .904 SV% over 29 appearances this season for the Phantoms. His 15 victories are tied for the sixth most in the USHL. The 18-year-old has also earned four shutouts, the most by any goaltender in Phantoms USHL history and the second most in the League this season. Two of his shutouts came in a span of 24 hours as he blanked Team USA on November 23rd and 24th. Romeo has drawn attention from NHL scouts as he was listed at #30 among North American goaltenders in the midterm rankings by NHL Central Scouting.

The native of Cary, North Carolina won four games for Youngstown last season in 16 appearances. His next victory will be the 20th of his USHL career.

“I’m extremely proud and excited for Sean and his family,” said Phantoms head coach Anthony Noreen. “This has been a goal of his since he came here to Youngstown, and I’m very happy that he was able to achieve it while playing us. Maine is a tremendous program and will give Sean the opportunity to continue developing, not just as a player, but as a man.”

Romeo will be joined at Maine by Phantoms teammates Cam Brown and Dan Renouf who are also committed to the school. Six other current USHL players are committed to Maine; Brian Morgan (Indiana Ice), Victor Bjorkung (Sioux Falls Stampede), Liam Pecararo (Waterloo Black Hawks), Brandon Salerno (Waterloo Black Hawks), Eric Schurhamer (Waterloo Black Hawks).

The University of Maine is a member of Hockey East and has eight USHL alumni on the roster this season; Mark Anthoine (Sioux Falls/Chicago), Joe Diamond (Omaha Lancers), Nick Pryor (Des Moines/Waterloo), Dan Sullivan (Omaha Lancers), Jon Swavely (Sioux City Musketeers), Stu Higgins (Youngstown Phantoms), Ryan Lomberg (Muskegon Lumberjacks), and Matt Morris (Dubuque Fighting Saints).
