Trappers wrap-up successful camp

NORTH BAY – The North Bay Junior Trappers wrapped up their third and final camp at Pete Palangio Arena here in the city before they begin the real thing in late August. A total of 32 players from North Bay, to the GTA, to Ohio, made the journey to North Bay for the Trappers three-day main July Training Camp which wrapped up Sunday afternoon. The club continued to build their team with local talent as they committed to North Bay Midget AAA Trappers graduate Eric Champagne. The big winger scored 14 goals along with 32 assists totaling 46 points in only 28 games with the Midget Trappers in 2012-13.  He also scored a goal in his first game as an affiliate with the Jr. Trappers last season. The Trappers also committed to Burlington, Ont product C.J. Nicholson.

The speedy forward notched 16 goals along with 15 assists in 30 games with the GMHL’s Powassan Eagles in 2012-13. Jr. Trappers general manager Chris Dawson expects to announce another handful of signings before the middle of July, while another handful of prospects from the camp were given invitations to the Trappers final camp in late August.  “It was another solid and competitive camp,” said Dawson after the camp.  “We were impressed with the quality of the players attending the camp and the amount of local players – and quality local players – that showed interest in wearing Trappers red white and blue.” TRAPPERS ADD STAFF The Trappers also have brought in former Canadore College Varsity Club Hockey assistant coach Justin Mathias on board as an assistant coach to help out new Trappers bench boss Zane Neily. On the scouting side, Glen Huard will take on the new role of Director of Scouting; taking over from Wayne McClelland who joined the staff of the SJHL’s Humboldt Broncos this spring.

The well respected hockey Dad of the Guelph Gryphons forward Nick Huard, was recently the vice chair for the 2013 Dudley Hewitt Cup committee. Longtime West Ferris Minor Hockey coach Heath Marson has also joined the organization officially as the Trappers Northern Ontario Scout. The Trappers would also like to thank returning goaltender Dustin Hummel for his hard work helping out at the camp.
