The United Way of Genesee County in Michigan celebrates National Mentoring Month with funded partner Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Flint. The campaign promotes youth mentoring and we are pleased to feature Big Brother of the Year, Jon Jepson, who is the assistant coach for the NAHL’s Michigan Warriors.
Jon Jepson initially became involved with BBBS in April 2010 when he agreed to host a Monday’s Child at Iceland Arena where he is a manager. He met his future Little Brother during that filming. His connection with Trevor was immediate and he inquired with the Case Manager how he could become his Big. He and Trevor have been matched for over 2 years now. Trevor was introduced to lacrosse by Jon and he became a mentor at his school last year due to his Big Brother’s influence. Jon makes sure he takes time out of his busy schedule to attend Trevor’s football, basketball and baseball games. Trevor’s mother, Lisa, realizes how fortunate her son is to have such a great Big Brother. She commented, “…I have seen many volunteers come and go over the years, but I have never seen one have such a positive impact on my child as Jon Jepson has.”
Jepson became the Warriors assistant coach in the summer of 2012. Jepson moved to Flint in 2010 after roles as a Hockey Director and General Manager at arenas in Fort Worth, Texas and Lafayette, Louisiana. A native of Toledo, Ohio, Jepson played Division I hockey at the University of Connecticut, graduating with a Master’s degree in Sports Management. He was a 1998 Junior B National Champion and played Junior A Hockey in the North American Hockey League, where he was selected as an All-Star. Jepson played for both the Chicago Freeze and the Grand Rapids Bearcats.
He has coached all levels of youth hockey, from beginners to high school. The NAHL would like to wish Coach Jepson congratulations for his outstanding work in the community.
