4-point night gives Gold Miners’ Stortz 100 and NOJHL scoring title

TIMMINS, Ont. – Brayden Stortz had a goal and three assists to give him 100 points on the season and the Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League scoring title as the Kirkland Lake Gold Miners dismantled the Timmins Rock 6-1 Wednesday evening at McIntyre Arena.

After a scoreless opening period, Stortz collected his 38th tally of the season near the nine-minute mark of the middle session to put the Gold Miners up 1-0.

Kirkland Lake kept coming and notched two more to go up by three as Sam Mancini and Blake Anderson both beat Rock starter Logan Ferrington.

Timmins did get one back late in the second stanza when Wayne Mathieu struck with nine seconds left for his nine marker of the campaign.

Alexander Hester then tallied twice in the third with Stortz and Logan Fredericks earning helpers on both goals before Fredericks notched his league-leading 51st marker of the season to wrap up the night’s scoring with 2:31 to go.

The 100 points for Stortz puts him one ahead of Cochrane’s Hunter Atchison for the most in the NOJHL this season.

Fredericks too had a four-point evening as his torrid offensive pace has seen him amass 23 in total in has past five games as well as 89 overall.

Victor-Olivier Courchesne started for the Gold Miners and played half the contest as he stopped all 17 shots he faced.

Tyler Mazzocato handled 19 of the 20 attempts he faced in relief as he earned the win.

Ferrington saw 44 shots fired his way in a losing cause for the Rock.
