In today’s world of junior hockey, almost everything we once understood about the pathway to college hockey has changed—and unfortunately, it has not changed in favor of the player.
For many players, spending another year in junior hockey is no longer a step forward. In fact, it can be a waste of time, money, and emotional energy.
Families who have spent years chasing the college hockey dream across North America are now facing a shrinking number of opportunities. Colleges are closing programs, and more closures are expected in 2027. At the same time, NCAA rule changes involving CHL player eligibility and the implementation of the Five-in-Five eligibility rules are creating an entirely different competitive landscape.
The problem is that many families are standing at a crossroads without realizing that the road they have been traveling may no longer lead where they think it does.
The uncomfortable truth is this:
Today, every player has to make decisions based on what is best for himself and his future.
Loyalty to a junior program means very little if a player has an opportunity to begin his college career now. Hockey is a team sport in every sense of the word when you step on the ice. But when it comes to your education, career, and future, it is a “YOU” decision.
So we have a simple question for 2006-born players:
Why pay to play another year of junior hockey when hundreds of college hockey opportunities exist right now?
Why spend another year paying for junior hockey, hoping that something changes, when that same investment could be going toward an actual college education—earning credits, beginning your degree, starting your adult life, and continuing to play the game you love?
And let’s be honest about the current hockey landscape.
Unless you are playing in the USHL or CHL, the overwhelming majority of players are not viewed as NCAA Division I prospects.
And outside of legitimate, free-to-play Tier II opportunities, the vast majority of players are not viewed as NCAA Division III prospects either.
That brings us to the question every player and family needs to ask:
What exactly are you waiting for?
Another year of junior hockey?
Another year of paying tuition, billet fees, travel expenses, equipment costs and everything else that comes with it?
Another year hoping someone suddenly sees you differently?
Another year hoping the right coach happens to watch the right game?
Another year hoping your situation somehow changes?
Do you honestly believe that is the most likely outcome in today’s hockey environment?
Or is it time to make a different decision?
A smart decision.
A long-term decision.
A life decision.
For players who have a legitimate opportunity to begin college hockey now, that opportunity checks all three boxes.
You can begin earning college credits.
You can begin building your future.
You can continue playing competitive hockey.
And instead of paying simply to remain in the junior hockey system, you can be investing in yourself and your education.
The hockey landscape has changed.
The old path doesn’t always make sense anymore.
And waiting another year simply because that is what players have traditionally done may be the biggest mistake you can make.
The question isn’t whether you can play another year of junior hockey.
The question is:
What are you getting in return for that year?
If the answer is simply “I’m hoping something changes,” it may be time to stop hoping—and start making decisions.
College hockey now, when the opportunity is available, may not just be the hockey decision.
It may be the smartest life decision you make.
