Raiders add some blueline backup in trade with Thunderbirds

Prince Albert, Sask. — The Prince Albert Raiders have acquired defenceman Henry Chmiel in a trade with the Seattle Thunderbirds.

The deal sees the Thunderbirds gain a fifth-round pick in the 2028 WHL Prospects Draft.

Chmiel, 18, is in the midst of his first major junior season and has suited up for 10 regular-season matches, logging six shots on goal, eight penalty minutes and a +1 rating.

The 6-foot, 230-pound blueliner was originally listed by the T-Birds in 2024 and signed a WHL Scholarship and Development Agreement in May of 2026.

Described as a reliable, hard-nosed defender, Chmiel joins a Raiders blueline that features projected top 2027 NHL Draft pick Brock Cripps and Bennett Kelly, both of whom played significant minutes in Prince Albert’s run to the 2026 WHL Championship Series.

Prince Albert (3-6-1-2) is on a four-game point streak, most recently edging the 2026 Ed Chynoweth Cup champion Everett Silvertips 3-2 in a rematch of last season’s final.

The Raiders are back in action on Saturday night as they visit the surging Swift Current Broncos (9-4-0-0) for a 6:00 p.m. ST puck drop.

Fans can stream the WHL’s regular season for free on the league’s YouTube channel.
