Jacobson; Arnold pace Wilderness in win over Miners

SPOONER, Wis. – Sawyer Jacobson tallied twice and set-up two others while Alex Arnold doled out four assists to help lead the Wisconsin Wilderness to a 5-2 victory over the English River Miners Friday night in Superior International Junior Hockey League play at the Spooner Ice House.

Jacobson gave the home side the lead with six minutes to go in the opening stanza only to see John Morales level the proceedings with a late man advantage marker.

Vincent Currao then gave the Miners the lead midway through the middle session, but the Wilderness answered back with efforts less than a minute apart from Shane Billings and the eventual game-winner from Billy Foy to go up 3-2 after 40 minutes.

Arnold then set-up Billings and Jacobson, in the final frame, for their second goal each in the contest to round out the scoring.

Griffin Strain turned aside 41 of the 43 shots he faced to register the win for Wisconsin with P.D. Melgoza seeing 39 pucks fired his way in defeat.

SIJHL action resumes Saturday as the top two teams in the league standings square off at the Fort William Gardens in Thunder Bay with the second place North Stars hosting the front-running Fort Frances Sabres in a 7:30 p.m. start.
