Eskimos tame Wildcats Sunday

ELLIOT LAKE – A pair of early second period power play markers helped the Abitibi Eskimos skate to a 5-2 triumph over the Elliot Lake Wildcats Sunday evening in a Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League contest at Centennial Arena.

The visiting Eskimos got off to a quick start skating to a 2-0 lead before the game was two and a half minutes old on markers Ryan Attwood and Cameron Etherington.

Elliot Lake got themselves on the board with a man advantage effort supplied David Chiarelli at 6:42.

The Wildcats struck again on the power play to knot the affair at 2-2 after 20 minutes when Shane Woolsey banged in his sixth of the campaign at 18:18.

Abitibi regained the lead 61 seconds into the middle stanza with an extra man marker of their own, which came off the stick of Kealey Cummings to make it 3-2.

Cummings then helped set-up the Eskimos fourth goal of the night with the Wildcats down a skater as he and Brennen Roy combined to feed Blake Cudmore at 4:22.

It stayed that way until the waning moments of the contest where Scott Peng iced it with a second to go as he notched his first NOJHL goal to round out the scoring.

Brady Clouthier and Roy each chipped in with two-assist nights for the winning side while Alec MacKenzie and Spencer MacLean did likewise for Elliot Lake.

Chet Tooker went the distance for Abitibi and picked up the victory in net making 38 saves on the night.

Wildcats starter A.J. Smith allowed four against on 12 attempts and suffered the loss.

Allan Menary made eight saves minutes of relief.

NOJHL play resumes Wednesday on two fronts as Sudbury hosts Kirkland Lake while Blind River entertains Sault Ste. Marie in a pair of 7:30 p.m. starts.
