The Death Pool – Politicians Involved With Hockey

Happy Monday kids!  I hope everyone enjoyed the weekend and caught a couple games.  I know I watched a few, and caught up on some reading in between games.

You know what I found interesting?  All the politicians involved in trying to make hockey decisions.  In the US and Canada, there are politicians involved everywhere, and I am here to tell ya, they are worse than the pit bull hockey moms, they could screw up anything.

So, a city owns an arena.  They pay the arena manager to run it.  They pay him to sell ice and keep up the building.  So how come an arena manager isn’t allowed to sign ice contracts without some of these “city officials” or politicians getting their say?

When most ice arenas that are owned by local cities are running at a financial deficit, these idiot politicians want to hold the ice rental up, or in some cases keep it from happening.

Guess what idiots?  Let the arena manager do his job and the arena wont have the deficits or at least as much of one.

If the arena is owned by the city, it is owned by the tax payers.  Why are you tax payers putting up with these idiots.  Fighting over who gets what dressing room?  Who gets what logo in the ice?  Who is or isn’t in a junior team ownership group?  What league or level the team will play in or at?

Ummmmmm yeah the last I looked, most tax payers don’t like paying people to do a job that other people wont let them do.

These local politicians, who want to vote on everything, debate everything, tie in other peoples feelings on everything, should be either thrown out of office, or actually forced to shovel cow shit.  I prefer the cow shit because that’s all they should be doing.

These local politicians are costing the tax payers more money.  The arena managers cant do their jobs, and in many cases, new business is electing to leave the smaller cities.

Just for giggles, I called a city owned arena on Friday.  I spoke to the manager and asked about a lease for a junior team for 2015.  The arena has been publicly stating they are having deficits of tens of thousands of dollars every year.  The lease proposal would have brought in fifty thousand dollars in 2015 if it was a real proposal.

Sounds like a good deal right?  Cut the deficit of the city owned building!  Hell yeah Dave!

No way kids!  I got transferred to the local politicians office to set up a meeting with the mayor and other politicians.  First the guy says they are not interested in “that level” of junior hockey.  Second thing this idiot says when I insisted was “we probably cant get you onto the agenda for a public hearing until spring.”

Ok, now these guys are really stupid.  They just cost the local city a bunch of money right.  But it gets better.

So I have someone else call them with another lease option.  This lease option pays the city about ten thousand dollars less per year than the first proposal.  He gets sent over to the same politician who invites him to come have coffee with the other politicians a few days later, and says “don’t worry about a thing.  The city needs the revenue.”  No mention of a public hearing, and oh yeah by the way the second lease is for a lot les money for an arena with a deficit.

Funny isn’t it kids?

Politicians have no business running an arena.  You pay the manager to sell ice, let him sell it.  You pay the manager to do a job, why continue to make it a political stage when they try to do their job.

If you have a story like this in your community, you know, one where idiots are making mountains out of mole hills to keep progress from taking place.  How about you don’t re-elect them next week on election day.  How about the next public hearing you show up and ask why city officials are wasting more tax payer dollars and time on something the arena manager is paid to do?

Nah, why would we bother to hold them accountable for our money?  That’s crazy talk I know.
