Saint John Sea Dogs forward Alexis Joseph has been named assistant captain of the Canadian team set to compete in the Hlinka-Gretzky Cup, which will take place from Monday, 3 Aug. to Saturday, 8 Aug. in Edmonton.
The Lachenaie, QC native will assist captain Landon DuPont (Everett Silvertips, WHL). The other assistant captain will be Maddox Schultz (Regina Pats, WHL).
Joseph, along with DuPont, is one of only two players in the Canadian squad to have represented Canada at the 2026 IIHF U18 Men’s World Championship. Regarded by many as one of the top prospects for the 2027 NHL Draft, he recorded 60 points, including 24 goals, in 54 games during his debut season in the QMJHL. Notably, he notched his first career hat-trick on December 31th last year.
The Canadian team will feature a total of five QMJHL players. Joseph will be joined by players from the Newfoundland Regiment – defender Quinn Norman and forward Benjamin Veitch – Cape Breton Eagles goaltender Sam Berthiaume, and defender Malik L’Italien of the Halifax Mooseheads.
Canada opens the 2026 Hlinka Gretzky Cup against Switzerland on Aug. 3 at 8 P.M. AT. It will face Slovakia on Aug. 4 and Sweden on Aug. 5 to close out the preliminary round before the tournament concludes with the medal games on Aug. 8.
Prior to the start of the tournament, Canada will close out the Hlinka Gretzky Cup pre-tournament schedule against Czechia on Aug. 1 at 8 P.M. AT at Rogers Place.
