An Advisers Life – If You Want Something Different You Have To Do Something Different

Talk is cheap boys. There are a lot of good talkers out there. I am not just talking about players either. There are a lot of coaches who are good talkers too.

I am not a fan of talkers. Too many people listen to all the talkers on Tik Tok and other social media platforms. I am a fan of guys who just get things done.

In order to get things done, like getting to the next level, you have to do something different than you are currently doing. If you think by repeating the same old training routines, same old eating habits, or sleeping habits, or any other habit you may have will get you to the next level, you do not understand how this works.

If your nutrition and supplement plan are not giving you the gains you are looking for, how long will you wait before changing things?

If your skates are worn out, how long before you replace them? If you are not getting the results you want from your stick, how long before you try a new pattern or lie?

Are you someone who breaks a skate lace and then doesnt get a new one? That may be a stupid question, but if your diet isnt working, it is just as bad as a broken lace. If your training isnt working, it is a broken lace.

I had a converstation with a really good player the other day. He was smart, skilled, and is a legitimate NCAA prospect. At nineteen, he has this season and next to get a commitment. All summer coaches told him he needs to get bigger and stronger to get to the next level. Fair enough, and unlike most, these coaches actually gave some suggestions on what he could do to improve.

Have those suggestions been implemented? No. Why? Because it doesnt “fit in” with his current routine that his current trainer has for him.

News flash. If what you are doing isnt working, its just not working and its time for a change.

If your summer “camp schedule” is a repeat or close cousin to last summers “camp schedule”, what really makes you think you are going to have different results?

The bottom line is really simple. If you want something different, you have to do something different. There is not any player who elevates his game regularly that keeps doing the exact same things over and over. There is no player who elevates his game regularly who see’s things the same from season to season.

Growth/Development comes over time, and all growth comes with change. All change comes with at least a little pain. Whether that pain is getting a new trainer, new nutritionist, new team, new skates or w whole new way of looking at your career path. Change, always, one way or another causes growth.

When old ways of training do not produce new results, its time for change. When old skates are worn out its time for change.

When a stick breaks we are quick to drop it on the ice and immediately go for a new one. So why when something else is broken are so many of you not changing as quickly as you would when your stick breaks?
