Chiefs alternate captain Van Olm commits to Penn State

Spokane, Wash.- Spokane Chiefs alternate captain Shea Van Olm has announced his commitment to The Pennsylvania State University.

The 20-year-old will join the Nittany Lions for the 2025-26 season upon the conclusion of his WHL eligibility.

“Thrilled to announce my commitment to Penn State,” Van Olm said on his social media. “I am very grateful for this opportunity to continue my development as a hockey player and student. to my family, agent, coaches and teammates, thank you for your ongoing support.”

Van Olm is enjoying a breakout season in his final year with the Chiefs.

The 6-foot-1, 199-pound left winger leads the league in goals with 31 (including six game-winners) and has another 25 assists for 56 points and a +12 rating in 39 games.

He’s registered nine games with three or more points this season, highlighted by two hat tricks and a five-point night against the Wenatchee Wild on January 11, 2025.

Van Olm was drafted by the Edmonton Oil Kings in the sixth round of the 2019 WHL Prospects Draft.

He helped the Oil Kings lift the Ed Chynoweth Cup as WHL Champions in 2022 in his rookie campaign, adding an assist in nine playoff appearances.

The Calgary, Alta. product was later traded to the Kamloops Blazers ahead of the 2023 Memorial Cup, where he picked up another assist in four games when the Blazers hosted the prestigious tournament.

Van Olm has put up 156 points (71G-85A) in 234 career games over parts of five seasons.

Spokane (27-14-0-0) is 5-5-0-0 in its last 10 games to sit second in the U.S. Division and third in the Western Conference.

The Chiefs will visit the 2026 Memorial Cup host Kelowna Rockets on Wednesday, January 15.

The tilt kicks off the second half of the Wednesday Night in the Dub schedule, where select Wednesday-night games will be free to stream on WHL Live and the WHL’s YouTube Channel.

Puck drops between the Chiefs and Rockets at 7:05 p.m. PST.
