Cochrane finishes strong in win at Kirkland Lake

KIRKLAND LAKE, Ont. – Jon Marzec scored the eventual game-winning goal with 14:11 remaining to help the Cochrane Crunch finish strong and skate to a 6-3 victory over the Kirkland Lake Gold Miners Friday in Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League play at the Joe Mavrinac Community Complex.

Dustin Cordeiro put the visiting Crunch in front midway through the opening period as the veteran forward collected his 35th tally of the season.

Kirkland Lake countered with the equalizer from Evan Bidenti at 11:12 to knot the affair at 1-1.

Cochrane went back in front before the stanza was complete as the NOJHL’s leading goal getter and point producer in Hunter Atchison notched his 43rd marker of the campaign with 1:56 remaining.

Seamus Maguire made it 3-1 Crunch midway through the contest with the Gold Miners’ Logan Fredericks countering that with his 32nd in 2015-16.

Fredericks then added his second of the night and 33rd overall 4:20 into the third to knot the affair at 3-3.

Marzec came back with the eventual difference maker a minute and a half later while Atchison supplied some insurance 80 seconds after that with his 44th overall.

Marzec then iced it with three minutes left to round out the night’s scoring.

Jeran Knorr dished out three assists to aid the Cochrane cause while teammate John Stevenson had a couple of helpers.

Brayden Stortz assisted on all three Kirkland Lake goals.

The Crunch outshot the Gold Miners 38-28 with Brett Young picking up the win and Victor-Olivier Courchesne the loss.
