Confessions Of A Junior Hockey Coach – Dont Fix It If It Isn’t Broken Coach

Everyone want to win this time of year.  Everyone want to go into playoff strong, or finish the year on positive note.  No one want to go out with loosing effort.

To be sure it is a long season.  For some it will be longer as they chase the Championships.  So, during the long season, every player and coach figure out what work well and what not work so well.  After all it not rocket science.

Certain system work, certain player play well together.  It easy to see unless team is absolutely terrible, and there not too many team that are that bad in the world.

So when you have three player producing well together, what is coach thinking when he break up the line at end of the season?  Usually I would give an answer to the question, but there is no clear explanation.

When you have system that is working and producing results, what is coach thinking when he change the system?  Again, I would usually answer the question, but there is no clear answer.

I like to say the only answer to those question is over thinking and over coaching.  Yes, Coaches over think thing all the time which lead to over coaching, and then to mistake.

You never change what bring you success.  The basic foundation of success should never be change at any critical time.  Oh sure, you can change a line combination once in a while, but you do not put a player on the ice for double shift unless he has double shift before.  Why wear the player out all game when you need him to perform the next night?

Why shorten the bench when rolling all lines produce much success?  Over playing top line leave other lines cold, unengaged and thinking coach do not trust them in key situation.

Why do coach send the message all season, and then change the message?  Why do coach tell player they must “buy in” to what he say and then he not “buy in” to the player at the end.

This is call desperation.  This is call coach putting himself before the team.  This is the coach who will always over think himself and will never win the championships, but more important will never win his player loyalty.  This is also coach who will have potential returning player question him all summer and look for other options.

Simple thing is to never tell the 50 goal scorer to stop shooting.  If the goalie is stopping the puck, you do not tinker with the mechanics.  If the defense is stopping the other team, you do not tell them to change the play.

It is simple to understand you do not get in the way of success.  If it not broken coach, just don’t try to fix it.
