Courchesne’s 25 saves leads Gold Miners to shutout victory over Eagles

KIRKLAND LAKE, Ont. – Victor-Olivier Courchesne turned aside all 25 shots he faced to help lead the Kirkland Lake Gold Miners to a 2-0 triumph vs. the Soo Eagles Saturday in Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League play at the Joe Mavrinac Community Complex.

Kirkland Lake got the only goal they would need on this night 15:14 into the opening period as Marc-Antoine Arseneau notched the eventual game-winner with his 16th marker of the season.

The contest remained a tight-checking affair the rest of the way with the game’s only other tally not coming until there was 28 seconds to go in regulation as Logan Fredericks iced it with an empty netter for the Gold Miners.

Jack Hickey was solid in defeat in the Eagles net finishing the night with 37 saves.

The shutout was Courchesne’s first in the NOJHL as he won for a second straight start.

With the victory, Kirkland Lake raised their record to 18-7-2-1 while the Eagles dropped to 9-16-0-1.
