Eskimos top Voodoos in high scoring affair

POWASSAN – The Abitibi Eskimos duo of Jake Holland and Ryan Kerr racked up five points apiece to help defeat the Powassan Voodoos 10-6 Saturday in a high-scoring Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League affair held at the Powassan Sportsplex.

Tristan Salesse and Nick Hautanen also had big nights for Abitibi with four points apiece.

It was the Voodoos who grabbed a 3-1 lead after one period of play on markers by Brendan D’Agostino, Steve Harland and Jacob Erwin while Hauntanen connected for the Eskimos.

The visitors stormed back in the middle frame outscoring the hosts 5-2 to take a one goal lead into the third period.

Holland with a pair, Hauntanen, Salesse and Kerr all found the back of the net for Abitibi in the session with Harland and Kyle Moore supplying tallies for Powassan.

In the final session Nathaniel McLeod pulled the Voodoos even with an early power play marker, but the Eskimos answered back with four unanswered to pull out the victory.

Ryan Tront tallied twice, including the game-winner while Holland finished off a hat trick and Blake Cudmore added a single to round out the scoring.

Special teams played a big role in the win as Abitibi scored three times with the man advantage and added another trio when they were shorthanded.

Chet Tooker made 30 saves to pick up the win in net and Matt Young allowed nine against in defeat on 34 shots with Jack Ondrovic giving up one in a brief relief stint.
