Gold Miners crown Eskimos

KIRKLAND LAKE – Coonor This tallied twice and doled out three assists as the Kirkland Lake Gold Miners crowned the Abitibi Eskimos 7-1 Friday evening in Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League play at the Joe Mavrinac Community Complex.

Kirkland Lake jumped out to a 2-0 lead after 20 minutes on markers a minute and a half apart courtesy of Steven Babin and Tristan Hazlett.

The Gold Miners extended their cushion to five in the middle stanza tacking on three more off the sticks of Ryan Aubertin, Luc Soares and Thie.

Aubertin then helped set-up Jeremy Dumont and Thie in the final frame as part of a four-point evening as the home side assured themselves of the victory. Aubertin’s efforts allowed him to register points in his 12th straight outing while Thie ran a streak to six in succession.

Abitibi did dash Josh Erickson’s shutout bid with 4:12 to go as Brady Clouthier reached the 20-goal plateau on the season to round out the scoring and extend a consecutive game point streak to six.

Erickson finished with 23 saves to pick up the win while Ryan Ferguson faced 36 shots in defeat in his NOJHL debut.
