Gold Miners tally twice in 3rd to topple Voodoos

KIRKLAND LAKE, Ont. – The Kirkland Lake Gold Miners picked up a pair of third period tallies to defeat the Powassan Voodoos 3-2 Friday evening in Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League play at the Joe Mavrinac Community Complex.

Kirkland Lake had the lone goal in the opening 20 minutes as Logan Fredericks notched his 23rd of the season 3:27 into the contest.

Powassan tied it early in the middle session on a Bo Peltier effort.

The visiting Voodoos then went in front at 11:28 of the frame when Tyler Peters collected his team-leading 28th marker of the campaign.

Answering back, the Gold Miners got the equalizer 60 seconds into the third as Sam Mancini picked up his first NOJHL for the home side.

Kirkland Lake then provided the difference maker with five minutes remaining in regulation when Alexander Hester supplied the game-winner as he secured his sixth goal since joining the club back on Dec. 11.

Brayden Stortz had a pair of assists for the Gold Miners while Daniel Golba did likewise for Powassan.

Victor-Oliver Courchesne made 22 stops to pick-up the win for Kirkland Lake.

The Voodoos Garrett Forrest faced 38 shots in defeat.
