KIRKLAND LAKE – The Kirkland Lake Gold Miners used the strength of five different goal scorers to defeat the Mattawa Blackhawks 5-2 Saturday in a Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League match-up at the Joe Mavrinac Community Centre.
Bryan Lubin opened the scoring 13:35 into the first period before Mattawa’s C.J. Nicholson tied it two and a half minutes later.
Jeremy Picard put the home side back on top with his fifth of the campaign before the opening stanza was completewhile extending a consecutive game point streak to seven in the process.
The Blackhawks tied it once again five minutes into the middle session as Justin St. Germaine picked up his first in a Mattawa uniform.
Dylan Rosen however notched the eventual game-winner just 58 seconds later for Kirkland Lake.
Charles Bruneau-Crete added one more for the Gold Miners before the session was complete as they took a two-goal lead after 40 minutes.
Zach Pease then rounded out the scoring for Kirkland Lake 3:36 into the third to cap off the Miners win.
Josh Erickson stopped all 15 shots he faced in 35 minutes of relief to record the win while Devon Debastos started and gave up two against on 11 attempts in 25 minutes of work.
Joe Sheppard kicked out 30 of 35 attempts fired his was in defeat for Mattawa.
