Jude Hull – Yes There Is A Third Generation July 26, 2012 7:45 AM

Imagine the pressure. Your Father and Grandfather are two of the most prolific scorers in NHL history. What do you do when its your chance to play the game?

Put on the goalie gear!

Jude Hull having recently completed his senior season at St. Paul Academy in St. Paul, Minn, will be attending training camp with the NAHL’s Odessa Jackalopes.

Hull will attempt to make the same jump that goaltender Connor Hellebuyck took last season for the Jackalopes. With both goaltender spots open, Justin Davis is not returning, Hull will be given every opportunity to ear a position.

Undrafted and having just finished his high school career, Hellebuyck came to main camp and stood on his head. Hellebuyck turned the opportunity into a starting position with the team, a scholarship to the University of Massachusetts-Lowell and, last month, and then an NHL draft pick of the Winnipeg Jets.

Joe Clark, Jackalopes general manager, has been quoted saying; “I’m a firm believer in blood lines, I’m looking forward to seeing him on the ice."

That Hull finds himself guarding the net is ironic given the family’s history.

Bobby Hull scored 1,808 points (913 goals, 895 assists), Brett Hull tallied 1,391 (741-650) and uncle Dennis Hull finished with 654 points (303-351). Brett Hull scored the Stanley Cup-winning goal for the Dallas Stars in 1999.

Imagine wanting to play a little shinny in the summer months with your father, Brett Hull is not a bad shooter to work with.

Jude struggled at the start of last season at St. Paul. It wasnt until a tournament last fall when his father made the trip from Dallas and they spoke about confidence and focuss that Jude was able to turn it around. As the season progressed from that point he was a dominating net minder.

Judes hockey idol? One of his fathers former team mates, two time Vezina trophy winner and Stanley Cup Champion Ed Belfour.

Making his way to Odessa Hull was encouraged by A.J. Bucchino. St. Paul Academy hired Bucchino, who is also the goaltending coach for the Des Moines Buccaneers of the United States Hockey League, Bucchino worked twice a week with Hull last season.

The work put in by both player and coach began to really take hold in February of 2012 in a game against St. Paul Johnson in which Hull stopped 22 of 24 shots. If that statistic doesnt grab you, then the fact that St. Paul Academy was regularly out shot two or three to one might put things into perspective. Hull was the saves leader in nearly every game he played last season.

Can another Hull family member make his own way in the game? Brett certainly came out from the shadow cast by Bobby. There is no reason to believe Jude wont be able to do the same.
