Medicine Hat, Alta. – Gavin McKenna can’t be stopped.
It was a career night for the 17-year-old product of Whitehorse, Yukon, as he racked up seven points, including a hat trick, in a resounding 7-3 victory over the Red Deer Rebels. The incredible showing extended McKenna’s eye-popping point streak to 38 games, vaulting him past former Rimouski Oceanic forward Sidney Crosby for the second-longest point streak in the CHL since the year 2000.
McKenna’s 38-game run is the longest point scoring streak in the CHL this season. It began November 6, 2024, and has seen the Tigers star collect 92 points (28G-64A) along the way. In 54 appearances this season, McKenna has only been held off the scoresheet three times.
The 6-foot, 165-pound left winger opened his monumental night with a primary assist on Tanner Molendyk’s eighth goal of the season.
After the Rebels tied the game 1-1, McKenna registered his 35th goal of the campaign to put the Tigers out in front. Next, he served up a primary assist on Oasiz Wiesblatt’s 34th tally of the season. McKenna finished up the first period by recording his 36th goal of the season, this one on the man advantage.

McKenna completed his hat trick by scoring a shorthanded tally 13:03 into the second period. It was his third hat trick of the season and the fifth of his career.
The projected top prospect for the 2026 NHL Draft added two more helpers in the third period, guiding Weisblatt to a hat trick of his own.
For McKenna, Saturday’s outstanding effort established a new single game high for his career. The phenom had previously registered six-point games on two occasions (November 1, 2024 – 2G-4A; January 6, 2024 – 1G-5A).
The CHL record scoring streak since 2000 belongs to Alexander Radulov of the Quebec Remparts, who logged a 50-game point streak in 2005-06.
The WHL record for points in a single game is 10, with five different players having accomplished the feat, including Gerry Pinder (Saskatoon Blades), Tom Lysiak (Medicine Hat Tigers), Dennis Sobchuk (Regina Pats), Kelly Glowa (Brandon Wheat Kings), and Brian Sakic (Tri-City Americans).
Having already clinched a berth in the 2025 WHL Playoffs, McKenna and the Tigers remain in pursuit of a Central Division crown and first place in the WHL’s Eastern Conference. Following Saturday’s slate, the Tigers (45-17-3-1, 94 points) sit atop the Central Division and Eastern Conference, two points ahead of the Calgary Hitmen (43-15-3-3, 92 points).
McKenna and the Tigers wrap up the regular season next weekend when they take on the Lethbridge Hurricanes (Saturday, March 22) and Hitmen (Sunday, March 23).
Sunday’s regular season finale with the Hitmen, which could determine first place in the WHL’s Eastern Conference, will be available for free to all fans on the WHL’s YouTube as special edition of Wednesday Night in The Dub.
