Boston Jr. Rangers defenseman Andrew Toomey is thrilled about his NCAA Division III commitment to Assumption University for the 2025-26 season.
Toomey, a Medford, Mass., native, has had plenty of experience in the NCDC over the last couple of years. Toomey split his time during the 2023-24 season with the Thunder Hockey Club and the Jersey Hitmen. He played five games for the Hitmen this season before taking his talents to the Boston Jr. Rangers. In 36 games played, Toomey put up 17 points (three goals and 14 points) and was a key asset on the blue line.
“I joined the Boston Junior Rangers just after the start of the season, and it turned out to be a great opportunity for my career,” said Toomey. “The Rangers, and Head Coach Rich DeCaprio, welcomed me in October, and I was able to develop my skills as a defenseman particularly on specialty teams. The coaches offered a lot of advice on improvement on the ice and in the film room.”
“The facility the Rangers play out of in Worcester was excellent, which is good because it will be the same facility I play at for Assumption for the next four years,” said Toomey. “Coach DeCaprio was especially generous and accommodating during my time with the Rangers, which is expected given his success in coaching for many years.”
Assumption head coach Michael Looney reached out to Toomey in mid-January regarding him continuing his hockey career there. The conversations between the two picked up when the coaching staff was able to watch him play extensively.
“The coaches like that I am a two-way defenseman who showcases skating and puck movement,” said Toomey. “They like the offensive dimension I bring to the game.”
Toomey dreamed of playing at the collegiate level and Assumption had everything he wanted in a college when it comes to hockey and academics. Toomey had the opportunity to interact with teachers, students and staff at the accepted students day and he felt at home. He has also grown to appreciate the city of Worcester in his time spent with the Jr. Rangers.
“Assumption’s successes in the Northeast-10 and its course of study grounded in traditional Catholic education were extremely appealing to me,” said Toomey. “As the recruiting process advanced, I became very comfortable with coach Looney and the staff, and visits to campus went extraordinarily well.”
During the off-season, Toomey will continue to work on his fundamentals and put on some size and strength in the weight room to be ready for the college level. But, he is thrilled to start his journey at Assumption in the fall and has a few things he hopes to accomplish.
“I have a lot of things I want to accomplish at Assumption,” said Toomey. “The first is to earn my degree and maintain a high GPA so that I start my career after hockey well-prepared. The second is to represent Assumption on the ice, in the classroom, and in the community with distinction. And certainly, I want to do everything in my power to bring as much success as possible to Assumption’s hockey program and contend for the NE-10 title each season.”
The NCDC congratulates Andrew Toomey, his family, the Boston Jr. Rangers and Assumption University for his commitment.
