NCDC Commitment Profiles: Utica’s Hodgett Excited For Future With Suffolk University

By Alexis Demopoulos

Through hard work and determination, Utica Jr. Comets defenseman Owen Hodgett earned himself an NCAA Division III commitment to Suffolk University for the 2025 26 season.

Hodgett, a Montgomery, Ohio, native, has spent the past two seasons in the Utica Jr. Comets organization and they have really helped him grow as a player. He split time during the 2023-24 season with the Premier and NCDC teams. He returned this season and in 54 regular season games, he had 14 points (three goals, 11 assists).

“I am so grateful to have played in Utica for the past two seasons,” said Hodgett. “The organization was a perfect spot for me to grow both on and off the ice. As a returning player from last season, coming back was an easy choice. I knew Coach Louis Educate and Coach Andy Starczewski would get the best out of me. I owe all my success to them.”

Suffolk Head Coach Shawn McEachern reached out to Hodgett late last year after a game he watched him play against the Islanders Hockey Club. Hodgett explained that the coaches liked his skating ability and his defensive responsibility.

Hodgett knew Suffolk would be the best fit for him academically and athletically as he has really enjoyed the recruiting process and what coach McEachern has done with the team.

“Suffolk interested me because it was a school with great academics and a lot of recent success,” said Hodgett. “They have a very strong business program where I can see myself succeed. I also liked the coach’s philosophy when it came to recruiting and developing players. I thought it would be a good fit for me. The team is full of talent and I’m happy to be a part of it.”

Another big factor of him choosing Suffolk was its location. Hodgett could really see himself thriving right in the city of Boston.

“While visiting the campus, I was very impressed with the location,” said Hodgett. “The heart of downtown Boston is a hard place not to fall in love with. The city setting, compared with the reputation of the program, made me realize it would be a perfect spot for me.”

Hodgett is ready to take things to the next level and will be working hard this off-season to help the team in whatever way he can this fall.

“I look to bring my work ethic and strong two-way play to Suffolk next season,” said Hodgett. “I will push myself offensively, that’s a part of my game I believe I can really make a difference in going forward. I’m ready to do what I can to help the team win.”

The NCDC congratulates Owen Hodgett, his family, the Utica Jr. Comets and Suffolk University for his commitment.
