Defenseman Nolan Berner from the Boston Dogs is thrilled to continue his hockey career with his NCAA Division III commitment to Misericordia University for the 2025-26 season.
Berner was happy he chose the Dogs organization for his juniors career as they have helped him immensely. In 17 games with the Dogs this season after their move to the NCDC, Berner has seven total points (two goals, five assists) and has been a key member of the blue line.
“The grit and determination we had from the top with our coaching staff and owner, down to the players was huge,” said the Milford, MI native. “We had an unorthodox season and the fact that not everybody jumped ship and continued to battle for the guy next to you really showed attributes such as loyalty that is hard to find. What initially made me sign with the Dogs was the coach, Cody Gonyeau. We had several conversations. He came and saw me play and I really liked what he had to say and his philosophy for his team.”
Berner started talking with Misericordia shortly after his teammate goaltender Ayden Pierce committed there.
“The coaches at Misericordia commented on my offensive ability and my strong mental awareness within the game, whether it be offensively or defensively,” said Berner.
Berner envisioned himself calling Misericordia home after he visited the campus. It made him feel like it was a second home rather than a school and that was the moment he knew. Growing up in Michigan, it also brought him back to when he went to school there.
“My biggest interest on the hockey side was the brotherhood that is already instilled within the players I have met,” said Berner. “My academic interests are a learning environment that is tough, yet forgiving. When talking to the tour guides, the professors are there to help you really grasp the concept of what is being taught rather than letting me drown in school work. I also adore the fact that it is a small Catholic college that takes me back home to Michigan and complements my history in a Catholic high school.”
Berner has had a great time in the Dogs organization and has learned a lot about himself as a player, but is continuing to refine his skills before he heads to college.
“Every part of my game can be improved, but what I am working on the most currently is defensive zone coverage,” said Berner. As an offensive defenseman sometimes little things like a shoulder check slip my mind. Once I can be proficient at that I will become more of a weapon for Misericordia.”
With just a few weeks left in the regular season, Berner wants to end his career with the Dogs strong.
“I want to leave it all on the table,” said Berner. “I want to continue to be a good teammate and good person, on and off the ice. With our season coming to an end, I want to be able to look back on these last games and with confidence say that my teammates and I left it all on the ice.”
The NCDC congratulates Nolan Berner, his family, the Boston Dogs and Misericordia University for his commitment.
