NOJHL welcomes the Nickel Barons June 18, 2012 7:44 AM

After months of speculation, rumor and searching, a new owner for the NOJHL’s Sudbury franchise has been found. Michael Mooney,a local businessman and former hockey player, has bought the Sudbury Cubs and renamed the team the Nickel Barons. The sale was approved at a meeting of the NOJHL executive over the weekend.

The NOJHL had rumors concerning Sudbury folding, moving, or being sold for several months now. It is no secret that expenses in Sudbury to operate a team are some of the highest in Ontario. Having lost one franchise, while gaining another in the Elliot Lake Bobcats, the league needed to retain all other teams moving forward in order to look for expansion in 2013-2014.

Mooney takes over the organization from Bill Scott, a fellow businessman from southern Ontario. Scott, although a passionate owner, was never truely embraced by the Sudbury community according to sources at McClelland Arena. Former Sudbury Wolves Assistant General Manager Oscar Clouthier has been named the new GM of the Barons.

The Barons still are still without a head coach, a position that was last held by Rod MacKenzie on an interim basis. Hiring a new head coach is critical at this point. Losing eight players due to graduation, the Barons need to restock with new talent.

A press conference to formerly announce the sale of the team will take place within the next few days.
