NOJHL’s Elliot Lake Cottage Cup preseason tourney schedule announced

ELLIOT LAKE – The Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League, in conjunction with the Elliot Lake Bobcats, announced today the game schedule for the upcoming and first annual Cottage Cup preseason tournament Aug. 30 through Sept. 1 at Centennial Arena in Elliot Lake.

Four of the eight teams in the NOJHL will take part in the three-day event, which will feature the Blind River Beavers, North Bay Trappers, Soo Thunderbirds and the host Elliot Lake Bobcats.

The tournament features a head-to-head round robin format with each side playing each other starting Friday, Aug. 30 with the Trappers taking on the Thunderbirds at 5 p.m. followed by the Beavers and Bobcats at 7:30 p.m.

After round robin action concludes Aug. 31 the top seeded squad will meet the fourth team in one semifinal on Sept. 1 at 10 a.m. while No. 2 meets No. 3 at 12:30 p.m.

From there the two semifinal winners will meet for the Cottage Cup title that same day at 4 p.m.

“We in Elliot Lake are very excited about having the opportunity to host this preseason tournament,” said Bobcats’ owner, general manager and head coach Ryan Leonard.

“We’re also pleased to have Blind River, North Bay and Sault Ste. Marie on board for what should be an exciting weekend of hockey as we gear up for the start of the 2013-14 regular season just days later,” added Leonard.

The NOJHL itself sees only positives from staging this type of tourney.

“This type of event is a benefit for all concerned,” stated NOJHL Commissioner Robert Mazzuca. “Not only does it allow the four teams to solidify their rosters for the start of the regular season, but it also allows the fans and scouts that will be in attendance the opportunity to watch four of our member clubs compete in one venue.”

“Kudos to Ryan Leonard, the Bobcats and the town of Elliot Lake for stepping up to host this first-ever event.”

A weekend pass to take in all nine games of the Elliot Lake Cottage Cup is only $28 while day passes will go for $12.

The following is game schedule for the three-day tournament along with contact information for hotels in and around Elliot Lake listed after that.
