OHL U16 Top Prospects Showcase – Day One Recap (Jan. 13, 2026)

Game One – Team McDavid (White) vs. Team Tavares (Blue)

Final: 3 (TAV) – 2 (McD)

The inaugural OHL U16 Top Prospects Showcase opened with Team McDavid and Team Tavares squaring off in the first game of the afternoon.

Team Tavares struck first in the final moments of the opening period, as Brayden Grima (Quinn, Shaughnessy) capitalized on a loose puck along the boards and snapped a sharp-angle shot from the goal line with just three seconds remaining.

Team McDavid answered in the second period when Adrian Sgro (Krottner, Kelly) converted from a tight angle of his own to even the score at one.

Late goals continued to be a theme, as Mason Quinn (Grima) restored Team Tavares’ lead near the end of the frame, breaking in alone and beating the goaltender low blocker.

In the third, Team McDavid responded once again. Jay Nimchonok (Voortman) fired a point shot that found its way through traffic, tying the game at two.

With time winding down, Team Tavares sealed the win as Matthew Taylor (Matheson, Samek) located a loose puck in the crease and buried the eventual game-winner with just over a minute remaining in regulation.

After the game, players reflected on the experience of competing in the showcase environment. “It was pretty nerve-racking at first. There are really good players on all teams, and it was faster than what I’m used to. But it was overall a good game, and we won, so that was good,” said Team Tavares forward Jake Readings.

That sentiment was shared across the ice. “I feel like we adjusted really quickly. It’s nerve-wracking playing in front of all these scouts and fans and playing with new players, but it was fun,” added Team McDavid defenceman Tayden Smith.

Game 2 – Team Byfield vs. Team Suzuki

Final: 6 (SZKI) – 2 (BFLD)

Team Suzuki pulled away in the second game of the OHL U16 Top Prospects Showcase, earning a 6-2 win over Team Byfield.

The scoring opened midway through the first period on the power play, as Colton Van Geffen tipped Roman Vanacker’s point shot to give Team Suzuki a 1-0 lead. Just 36 seconds later, Innis Robinson (O’Rourke, Christakos) doubled the advantage, finishing on a similar sequence.

Team Byfield responded in the second period, with Kyler Lauder cutting the deficit to one by converting on a breakaway with a backhand finish.

The third period, however, belonged to Team Suzuki. Braden Reilly (Fitzgerald) restored the two-goal cushion just 14 seconds into the frame, and on the same shift, Evan Fitzgerald (Cloutier, Davidson) extended the lead to 3-1.

Nicholas Christakos (O’Rourke) added another off a centring pass, before Tanner Adams (Kuklinski, O’Rourke) capped the scoring for Team Suzuki with a power-play marker. O’Rourke, who is the only underage kid playing in the game, finished the contest with three assists.
