Quick start sends Rock past Express

ESPANOLA, Ont. – Making the most out of a three-goal first period the Timmins Rock went on to defeat the Espanola Express 6-2 Sunday in a Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League contest held at the Regional Recreation Centre.

Timmins came out quickly grabbing a 3-0 lead before the game was 12 minutes old on tallies by Michael Norris, Tristan Salesse and Devin Panzeca, which spelled an early end to Espanola starter J.P. Sabourin’s day.

Aaron Callan came in to man the nets for the Express after the third Rock marker and went the rest of the way.

The home side did get the lone tally of the middle session in the latter stages of the second period when special teams saw Jason Bednarski strike on the power play with his first goal of the season at 17:03.

Timmins added to their lead however a couple of minutes into the final frame asJordan Rendle supplied his third of the campaign to make it 4-1.

Espanola moved back to within two 4:35 into the session thanks to a Riley Nadeu effort, but the Rock put the game away later getting additional goals from Norris and Salesse to round out the scoring.

Zachary Kercz had three assists for the visitors in the triumph while Bain Cunningham and Justin Mendoza chipped in with a couple helpers apiece.

Matthew Nixon finished with 45 saves to record for the win for Timmins.

Sabourin suffered the loss giving up the three against on 10 attempts while Callan kicked out 20 of 23 in relief.
