Red hot Mignosa sets Greyhounds franchise shorthanded goals mark

A historic Friday night at GFL Memorial Gardens saw overage forward Marco Mignosa etch his name into the Soo Greyhounds’ record books.

During a 6-3 victory over the Sarnia Sting, Mignosa notched the 14th shorthanded goal of his Ontario Hockey League career. The milestone tally breaks a three-way tie with Greyhounds alumni Steve Gatzos (1978-81) and Boris Katchouk (2014-18), crowning Mignosa as the franchise’s all-time leader in shorthanded markers.

The historic moment occurred early in the contest at the 4:18 mark of the opening frame. With the Hounds operating on the penalty kill, Brady Smith forced a critical turnover and quickly transitioned the puck. Mignosa capitalized on the feed, breaking in and snapping a shot low glove-side past Sting goaltender Kale Osipenko to give Sault Ste. Marie a 2-1 advantage.

“It means a lot. It’s super cool and I’m super proud,” Mignosa shared following the game. He was quick to distribute the praise, adding, “A lot of credit goes to assistant coach Brendan Taylor for designing an offensive PK where we can score goals.”

Mignosa’s record-setting tally was just one piece of a dominant four-point effort (3-1–4) that carried the Greyhounds to the win. The performance boosted his season line to 28 goals and 49 assists for 77 points. The Tampa Bay Lightning prospect currently sits four points back of the OHL scoring lead.

The Vaughan, ON native has been a relentless two-way presence throughout his career. His ability to read the ice and turn defensive assignments into high-danger scoring chances has solidified his reputation as one of the most dangerous penalty killers in the league.

Mignosa has enjoyed a red hot month of February. He and the Greyhounds are back in action on Wednesday night in Sudbury when he will tie Michael Quesnele for the second-most games played in Soo Greyhounds history at 294.
