The Death Pool – Over Priced Glorified Junior Hockey Expansion

Hey kids, its that time again.  What time you say?  It’s expansion season for over priced pay to play wanna be junior hockey.  That’s right boys and girls, everyone’s favorite game is about to become more diluted once again.

How’s that?  Well it looks like Canada is getting another league with nine pay to play teams.  Hey, I am not against pay to play, but do we really need nine more options?

There are plenty of great Tier III teams in the United States that offer a real value to the players.  They move them on to NCAA D-1 programs in some instances, in most its D-3 or ACHA.

They serve a purpose for development too.  The better teams are always moving players on to the NAHL and Tier II teams in Canada.  That’s what its supposed to be about isn’t it kids?

USA Hockey and Hockey Canada are really tightening up when it comes to any expansion.  Its got to be good for the game and over all development of players before they will approve any expansion these days.  I say that’s a good thing.

But freedom of choice allows anyone to start up their own league these days.

Now I am not taking a swing at AAU here because they have done an awesome job with the Western States Hockey League by all accounts.  The Mid West Junior Hockey league has been stabilized too, and I hear the Northern States league isn’t too bad either.

But what the hell are you guys thinking by allowing 9 expansion teams in Canada?  I mean really.  Some of the teams under AAU couldn’t even fill their rosters until January!

There weren’t enough players to go around last year, what makes you think there will be an extra 225 players this year to fill those rosters? Does anyone really think players are going to leave lower priced Hockey Canada or USA Hockey sanctioned teams to fill 225 roster spots?  Do you really think that many European players are going to come to North America to pay to play?  Hey pass me some of that Kool-aid man!

OOOOOOOOHHHHHHH Snap, I forgot, the WSHL added five teams this year too, so make that 350 players!

Lets not forget an new USAH sanctioned team in New Jersey and another one in the NORPAC.  How about the new Maritimes team, or a few other Hockey Canada expansion teams.

Yep, the player market is suddenly going to explode and hundreds of good players are going to fall from the sky. There must be a few hundred junior caliber players hiding somewhere right?

Yeah, that’s it, we don’t need to make sure they are all really junior caliber, we can just fill rosters with players that are cut from other teams and call them junior hockey players. Oh, my bad, you mean to say that everyone is entitled to play junior hockey?

Pull your heads out of your asses because not everyone is entitled to play junior hockey and not everyone is good enough.

Maybe you can hire this guy though….

Yep its all about the kids isn’t it?  Sure sounds like it from the Twitter posts.  Keep thumping your chest there boys, pump your own tires enough and you might actually start to believe your own stories.

You would have thought everyone would have learned their lesson a few years ago when the MWJHL announced all those start up teams and not half of them started up and only half of those that did start actually finished the season.  The MWJHL learned their lesson, but it seems no one else did.

Oh well, thanks for all the fodder for the next year boys, you just made my job easier.  How are all those lease negotiations going by the way?  I might be able to update this story next week.
