Happy Monday morning kids! I hope its as nice where you are as it is here. Spring is in the air, and I even got a chance to go to the driving range yesterday. Its a welcome break from all the time I have been spending at the rink lately.
So the other day I am at a camp doing some more scouting. Just minding my own business, watching players compete, and overhearing some hockey mom gossip I probably shouldn’t have heard. That must have been some party girls! Ha Ha Ha
So anyway, I am watching and I am seeing some pretty good players. Everyone looked to be excited about the upcoming season. So excited that just about all of them were talking about the “camp” they were invited to attend. Awesome right?
Yeah, not so much.
See, you players and parents need to wake up and realize that making the summer camp circuit and spending a butt load of money isn’t smart. What makes it dumber is when you think you can do it with one of your buddies.
Oh sure its nice to see someone at camp you know. Maybe its nice to share the car ride, and gas or hotel expenses. But what the hell do you do when one of you makes a team and the other doesn’t? Yeah, just think about that.
Your buddy who is a forward, you are a forward, ummmmm yeah kids, your competing for the same freaking spot on the team! Why the hell would you think its smart to bring your buddy to compete against him? Now if he is there and goes on his own that’s one thing. Every man for himself as they say.
Stop talking about camps with your friends and other parents. Unless your going to a main camp, have been drafted or tendered, going to a camp is nothing to be bragging about.
You know why they advertise the Lottery? So more people buy tickets. Yet, only one or a limited number of people win. Are you going to go out an tell your neighbor about the lottery drawing? Or better yet are you going to go pay for his tickets for him? What happens when he wins and you don’t?
In case you don’t get it, just in case you don’t understand, when you go to a tryout with your buddy, you better be ready to kick his ass if you have to in order to make a team. Want to ride home or room with him after that happens?
Keep your options to yourself. Keep your mouth shut.
Yeah I know, there are a few of you that wont listen to this advice. There are even more of you who will spend thousands of dollars chasing the summer camp circuit. Good luck with that kids! Ha Ha Ha
I hope you remember this article when you have blown all the money, and those that went about their business quietly are sitting on new roster spots because they handled themselves correctly.
Better hurry and buy that lottery ticket kids, they may run out of them.
