The Death Pool – Prepare For The Blood Bath – Guest Writer

Junior hockey. Love it or hate it, it’s the gift that keeps on giving.

Although, to be fair, some organizations have less in common with hockey and more in common with herpes. They just keep showing up, costing you money, and nobody’s really sure how they survived this long.

Travel up and down the East Coast—and toss in a few trips to the Midwest—and you’ll hear the same soundtrack everywhere: pay-to-play junior teams begging for players, AAA programs scrambling to fill rosters, and tryout camps getting canceled before the first whistle.

Think about that for a second.

What does it say when a team has to cancel a tryout?

A tryout.

The event that’s literally designed to see who wants to play.

It says there aren’t enough players to go around. It also says parents are finally looking at the bill and asking the dangerous question: “Wait… we’re paying how much?”

Let’s do the math.

$500 for the camp.

Hotel.

Gas or flights.

Food.

Skate sharpening.

Time off work Friday… maybe Monday… maybe both.

Congratulations. You just dropped a mortgage payment so Coach Clipboard can watch your kid skate three shifts before saying, “We’ll let you know.”

Spoiler alert: They already know.

The dream of junior hockey is being sold across North America harder than a late-night infomercial.

“But what am I actually buying?”

Excellent question.

Because for a lot of these organizations, you’re not buying an opportunity.

You’re buying a roster spot in the budget.

Harsh?

Maybe.

Wrong?

Not really.

Let’s be honest.

If your stat line last season looked like this:

Goals: 0

Assists: 2

Penalty Minutes: 147

…the next logical step probably isn’t “first-line forward in a higher league.”

Yet somehow every summer the emails roll in.

“You’re exactly the type of player we’re looking for!”

Of course you are.

Your Visa card shoots left.

Parents, here’s another clue.

If every pay-to-play team in North America suddenly thinks your kid is the next Connor McDavid while every free-to-play team keeps politely saying, “Thanks for coming,” maybe—just maybe—that isn’t a scouting conspiracy.

Maybe your coach last season wasn’t an idiot.

Maybe he was right.

I know, I know.

Mom and Dad just want to give little Johnny every opportunity.

Fair enough.

Here’s one opportunity that doesn’t cost five grand.

Tell him the truth.

Not every player is a free-to-play player.

There’s no shame in that.

The shame is dragging him to camp after camp after camp so he can collect another participation jersey, another “we’ll keep your file,” and another weekend of disappointment—all while you’re secretly chasing the hockey career you wish you’d had.

The train wreck is coming.

The 2025 bloodbath was just the warm-up.

2026 is loading.

Somebody cue the cleanup crew.

Clean up on Aisle 6.

There’s another AAA team canceling tryouts.
